Jamie's Italian: Finally back again

The last time I dined at Jamie's Italian was for my hubby's birthday last year, a couple of months after they first opened their doors. Since then it's been hard to get a booking when I wanted and the wait for a table was usually around 1.5 hours. To be honest I've given up on trying to get in again, I've tried three times in the last 6 months without much luck. The first attempt was for my birthday this year with a few of my girlfriends - we thought we'll try our luck at 5:30pm, one of my girlfriends who got there early was asked to take a seat because we had to all be present before they'll give us a table, however when we were all there, we were told that we had to go to the back of the queue and the wait was 1.5 hours! What? I was not happy so we went elsewhere. The second time we tried getting in was for a belated mother's day dinner with my mum-in-law and again it was 1.5 hours, we left a mobile number but by the time they called us we had gone elsewhere. The latest attempt was with hubby but the wait was again 1.5 hours so we left a mobile number and never got a call! I haven't been overly impressed to say the least. So why did I try again? Because my parents wanted to try it. So at 12pm on a Sunday afternoon, I rocked up to Jamie's Italian with my mum and dad and was told that the wait was only 30 minutes! Woohoo! We left a mobile number and they called us only 15 minutes later to tell us that there was a table available. Yay!

Marumo

I'm baaaack and there is no better restaurant than Marumo to share my experience with you for my first blog post in 6 months, this is because getting a booking at Marumo is an achievement in itself as they do not take bookings more than 2 months in advance and they are currently fully booked until 31st December 2014! So when JL asked if I wanted to join her for dinner with her hubby and workmates, I jumped at the chance and boy was I glad I did.

M.I.A

You may have noticed that I've been M.I.A (missing in action) for the last 6 months and I'm sorry if you have missed me. Work started taking over my life earlier this year and only now is it starting to settle down. I am determined to make a return and continue to share my love of taste testing food and life and sharing it with you.

Thank you for your continued support and please leave me a message if there are any restaurants that you would like me to taste test

xx

Deca Bodega

Tonight, JL and I went to Deca Bodega in Fremantle for our monthly catch up and yes as usual JL chose the venue. It was fairly quiet when we arrived at 7pm on a Monday evening and we were greeted immediately by a friendly waitress who seated us and brought us menus and water.

JL and I decided to order 3 dishes only to start off with so that we can fit in dessert and also because our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs but then I saw the mixed plate which had a couple of the items we wanted to order (fried eggplant with honey and mixed mushrooms) plus more so decided on that instead and hoped that we would have enough room for dessert.

Toastface Grillah

Hubby is back this week and we decided to go on an eating expedition this weekend. I've been wanting to go to Toastface Grillah since they opened last year but it just didn't happen until this weekend so needless to say I was very excited when I stepped into this tiny eatery hidden in the back alleyway with their menu written on a chalk board door.

At 1pm on a Saturday afternoon, Toastface Grillah was pretty quiet which I found quite nice; it was a little haven from the hustle and bustle of the city only an alleyway away.

Cantina 663: An unexpected experience

I have always been a fan of the food at Cantina 663 however service can sometimes be a bit hit and miss. Last night I went there with my workmates and I wasn't going to blog about it but we had a bit of an issue so thought I would share the experience.

Francoforte Spaghetti Bar

Wednesday night out with the pregnant ones and I suggested we check out Francoforte Spaghetti Bar in Northbridge, a place I've walked past a few times and still found interesting. On a Wednesday night at 6pm, there were already other patrons having dinner. We weren't early enough to get our own table and had to sit at the communal table which was fine as we were sat on one end with a couple sat on the other end. DT and RN were already there and had decided on what they wanted and as they are both pregnant we couldn't order the antipasto plate so settled on ordering four small pastas instead.

Big El's Latin American Fusion

Tonight was my monthly catch up session with JL, Jae and ML, as usual JL was responsible for choosing where to eat and decided on Big El's Latin American Fusion which is located where Sake Bar used to be in Northbridge.

When I walked in, I didn't get much of a greeting but I was shown to my seat where Jae and ML were already seated and had already chosen what they wanted so it was up to JL and I to quickly choose our dishes...we were hungry! We decided to only order 6 dishes because we were unsure how big the servings were and could always order more if we needed to.

Jackson's Restaurant

Happy belated Valentine's Day! You might have noticed that hubby hasn't featured in my blog posts recently, that's because he has started FIFO again and that he wasn't here for Valentine's Day (not that we usually celebrate) but it was a good excuse to go out for a nice dinner.

Jackson's Restaurant introduced Western Australia to degustation in 1998 when it was first established by chef Neal Jackson who is hanging up his apron in April this year. In September 2013, they ditched their degustation menu for an a-la-carte menu but it didn't seem to be well received and from January 2014 they resurrected their degustation menu. The five course degustation menu is $111 per person and if you want to enhance your experience with wine matching, add an extra $69 per person.

Baby Mammoth

So it's Fringe World time of the year again and tonight JL, MK, SS and I are off to see Paco Erhard's '5 Step Guide to Being German' (which by the way was so funny and I highly recommend it) and we can't go on an empty stomach so decided to try out Baby Mammoth which is a relatively new comer to the Northbridge food scene. Baby Mammoth was opened in September 2013 by food lovers Ryan and Tania and serves soul food or as they describe it classical food with a twist.

Bread in Common

I finally made it to Bread in Common - yes it took me a while to get here. It was our monthly tai tai lunch but we were missing AD because she recently had a little bub and they are still settling in but she has already been here before so didn't miss out in that sense. I was the driver today and as I am a typical Asian who doesn't like to pay for parking, I found a free parking spot on my secret parking street and we walked to Bread in Common which was pretty easy to find eventhough there wasn't any signage.

Bread in Common is another one of these warehouse turned funky restaurant/cafe and when we arrived there was already a short line forming at the entrance. At 12:30pm on a Saturday, I thought we were pretty lucky to turn up to a short line and being seated within 15 minutes. We got right down to business as soon as we sat down!

Bistro des Artistes

Happy birthday DT!

For DT's birthday dinner, I gave her a list of restaurants to choose from to ensure that both her and RN are able to choose something they can eat on the menu. DT chose Bistro des Artistes in Subiaco opened by master chefs Alain Fabregues (who created The Loose Box in Mundaring) and Emmanuel Mollois (who created Choux Cafe in Swanborne); both of whom have a wealth of experience in their field and very impressive CVs.

Oliver's on James Street

Happy Chinese New Year! So I guess you're wondering why I'm having Italian food on Chinese New Year? Well the answer is...I don't know. I guess, we had the big Chinese New Year eve dinner with the family the night before, dad and mum were both working tonight, in-laws are overseas and we were in Northbridge and wanted to utilise the Entertainment Book, is that good enough?

Izakaya Sakura Japanese Restaurant

Tonight's dinner was a welcome back catch up for FH who had just returned from her trip to Hong Kong and Japan, lucky! We had actually wanted to utilise the Entertainment Book but there weren't any restaurants located centrally that we wanted to try so I suggested Izakaya Sakura Japanese Restaurant which I had been once before with hubby and was pretty impressed with the authentic and tasty Japanese fare.

I had been wanting to go back to Izakaya Sakura but I had not had much luck as it was either closed or full the last couple of times I wanted to go, so I made sure I booked a table for us all this Wednesday night at 6:30pm. They were already pretty busy when we arrived but we were seated quickly. The menus were already on the table as place mats but was different to the menu offered when I last dined there.

Bistro Guillaume

Happy birthday RN!

Tonight we had a cosy birthday celebration for RN at Bistro Guillaume.  This was my second time there and I did not go with much expectations because it was so average the first time, but, I thought I'll give them a second chance but more importantly my two pregnant girlfriends were able to have most of the dishes on the menu.

Bistro Guillaume being situated at The Crown complex is one of those restaurants you need to book. On a Saturday night they do two seatings, one at 5:30pm but you need to leave by 8pm and the other at 8:30pm but you can stay until they close. We opted the 8:30pm session.

Six Senses Thai Restaurant

Tonight was my first outing in 2014 with a couple of my favourite ladies, HS and LD, who I haven't seen properly since before my trip to the USA and Canada. I was oncall for work this week so decided on Six Senses Thai Restaurant because it was close to work so I can quickly duck out and come back again if I get called.

I have walked past this restaurant on numerous occasions but I have never been in. When I arrived, HS and LD were already sitting there waiting because I got called back to work before dinner, boo! Well I guess the good thing was that there was already a bottle of water on the table and an ice bucket with the wine sitting inside ready to go.

Elmar's in the Valley

Happy new year! May your 2014 be filled with lots of amazing food, great company and endless laughter! Do you have a new year's resolution? If you do, good luck! My new year's resolution is obviously not to go on a diet because I already failed by going out for lunch with my family today. We didn't feel like going for dim sum so decided on Elmar's in the Valley in Henley Brook for some German cuisine.

Happy New Year

Happy new year!

A new year to most means new resolutions, new plans, new goals, new beginnings or just new something, for me it means a new restaurant rating scales with explanations! Is that sad or exciting? I'm not sure but here goes.
